Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe and Healthy in Autumn

It’s official! Autumn is here and we’re excited for cosy days and nights with our fur family. It’s a special time of year, but more important than ever to be in the know when it comes to keeping our pets safe in cold weather.

With the likes of Halloween and Bonfire night looming, this month we’ll guide you through how to adapt to your pet’s changing needs as the seasons shift and the darker nights draw in…

Darker Evenings

As the days get shorter and the autumnal weather sets in, there’s a number of extras you need to consider about your furry friend’s routine. If you’re regularly walking your dog in the evenings, making sure you’re both easily seen by passing drivers and cyclists is essential. We’d recommend a Reflective Harness and lead - the reflective material allows your dog to be more visible in dark conditions.

When it comes to our feline friends, try keeping them inside during the darker evenings. Providing home entertainment like our Naturals Fun Park will keep them busy whilst your pet’s indoors, or our range of Joules beds is perfect for cosying up on those colder nights. If you’re happy to let them out, cats will try to seek out any warm space they can find, which sometimes means under car bonnets. Whenever you head out in the car, make sure to give the horn a beep before getting into your vehicle and give them time to leave the area, just in case.

If you’re a small pet owner, it’s always handy to keep a torch at the ready too and check on any small pets who may be living in outdoor enclosures.

Adjusting Your Pet’s Diet & Maintaining Your Pet’s Weight

It’s a fact that the amount of exercise our pets get decreases as we head into the colder months, which can lead to some health issues. As outdoor activity becomes less frequent, try adapting your pet’s diet and encouraging more indoor play.

When it comes to meal times, we’d recommend a slow feeder which prolongs your pet’s eating and helps them maintain a healthy weight. However, it’s common knowledge that our dogs and cats are prone to comfort eating when it’s colder, so you can still treat them to some snacks. Our Chicken Fillet Strips for dogs are made with 97% real meat and are a healthy source of protein for your dog , with our Freeze Dried Duck Bites making the perfect vitamin-enriched treat for your cat.

Keeping Small Animals Safe

The unpredictable weather in the UK continues all year, which means small animals - like guinea pigs and rabbits - can become vulnerable if they’re kept outside. If you’re a small pet owner, make sure any enclosures are in a sheltered position, and consider adding extra protection in the form of plastic sheeting to reduce any exposure to autumn hazards.

Our Chill ‘N’ Snooze Bed is the perfect cosy spot to shelter from the elements, or if you’re able to keep them safely inside, our Carrot Beehive Bed makes the ideal spot for a snooze.
